Leh Ladakh is known as the Land of High Passes
Ladakh is a unique destination with lots of high passes, steep mountains and valleysThe road trip to Ladakh is full of scenic mountain passes. In Ladakh 'La' means pass in the local Ladakhi language and 'Ladakh' therefore means 'Land of High Passes.
Ladakh is home to some of the highest motorable roads in the world, which traverse these high passes and take you to exotic hidden destinations high in the Himalayas.
All the roads built on these high passes are built by Border Roads Organisation (BRO). The project is called Himank, which is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the most famous Khardung La road is constructed by BRO. It is claimed to be the world's highest motorable road. Other high passes are Tanglang La and Chang La passes.
Himank's work ensures access to sensitive military areas including the world's highest battle-ground at the Siachen Glacier and Pangong Tso Lake (at 14500 ft)
