The Beautiful lake Chandra Taal (Lake of the Moon)

Chandratal Lake is referred to be one of the most beautiful lakes located at an altitude of about 4300 m (14,100 ft) in the mighty The Himalayas. The Beautiful lake is situated on the Samudra Tapu which gives on to the Chandra River. Chandra Taal (Lake of the Moon) comes from its concave shape. This lake is also one of two high-altitude of India that has been appointed as Ramsar sites. Once a provisional residence for Tibetan traders traveling to Spiti and the Kullu valley, it attracts thousands of adventure lovers from all over the world. Chandratal Lake lies in the location of a place from where God Indra's carriage picked up Yudhishthira, the eldest of Pandava brothers in Mahabharata. The color of water of this holy lake keeps changing from reddish to orange to blue to greenish and best camping sites and an array of different wildflowers during springtime. The journey from Batal to Chandratal can be quite annoying but the charming views of the place will be worth it. The sun's light reflecting on the surface of the alarming Chandratal Lake makes it seem crystal clear.


Chandratal Lake is named after the moon not only because of its shape but also because of the way it reflects the moon. Tourists from all over the country visit the lake to witness its exceptional beauty in the night. Lake has 3 different phases like in the morning its turn deep aquatic blue in the evening turns greenish, and look pitch-black metal as the darkness of the night.


The best time to visit Chandra Taal is July and August. The water levels of the lake are high and the roads are cleaned off of the snow and making it easier to walk to the lake and the breathtaking view beauty


The nearest motorable road is the Kunzum Pass, which is to be had by road up to the lake. Earlier the route from Kunzum Pass to Chandratal Lake was traversable only on foot, but now you can travel on a motorbike or car you can rent cars from Manali to Chandratal. This will be expensive. And another option is to take a bus to Kaza in Spiti Valley and get down at Batal. From Batal, Chandratal Lake is a 14 km trek.
