Lamayuru referred as the Moon Land, is a major stopover on the Leh-Kargil Road. It is hidden in the folds of the mountains of this mystical land.

One of the oldest gompas in Ladakh and Spiti. The entire region is owing to the monastery's presence and their one visit is believed to liberate people from all their sins. Otherwise its a religious significance, the place looks like a picture postcard that has turned real.

Lamayuru is based on the Leh - Srinagar Highway, and you can visit it from Leh  or on your way from Srinagar if you are going to Leh. Any vehicle going from Leh to Kargil, or to Srinagar, will pass through Lamayuru. It is situated at a distance of 127 KM from Leh at a height of 3,510 meters. You can easily cover the place in one day return trip from Leh. This is the famous Buddhist monastery. Lamayuru is known for its monastery, and for its "lunar" landscape - but quaintly promoted as a "Moonscape" for the tourists. The landscape is certainly incredible. Lamayuru monastery is ancient. Visitors can also see the Lama Naropa in a glassed meditation cave.

Lamayuru was founded in the 11th century by Mahasiddacarya Naropa.

There is an annual festival called as Yuru Kabgyat which is the major attraction of the monastery. Mask dance by the lamas are the highlight of the festival. Another important ritual followed during the festival is the burning of effigies. It stands for destruction of the ego in every individual.

Slow-paced Lamayuru is one of Ladakh's most memorable villages and an ideal place to break the journey from Kargil to Leh. It's breathtaking. Lamayuru is home to one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, from the 10th century.

You can also do some things in Lamayuru Monastery. There people will greet you with the word "juley" along with a big smile. There people are very good hearted, some might invite at their stay to have a cup of tea. Otherwise tourist who love adventure can try hiking on these amazing mountains. You don't have to worry because hiking is not a big deal, even during the hiking you can capture some excellent frames.

Lamayuru is also very well-known for YuruKabgyat which is a two-day cultural festival. This festival happens in the second month of the Tibetan Lunar Calendar. This festival is also called the mask festival.

Best Time to Visit: Lamayuru Monastery is in between April to June. During these months the weather is good and you can visit the place comfortably.
